Parent Consultation: Supporting Your Child Through Suicidal Crisis
When Your Child Is Struggling with Suicidal Thoughts
Learning that your child is experiencing suicidal thoughts or has attempted suicide is one of the most frightening experiences a parent can face. You may feel overwhelmed, scared, helpless, or unsure of what to do next. These feelings are completely understandable—and you don't have to navigate this alone.
Our parent consultation services provide guidance, support, and practical strategies to help you support your child through this crisis while taking care of yourself and your family.
What Parent Consultation Offers
Parent consultation is not therapy for your child—it's specialized support for *you* as you navigate this incredibly difficult situation. We'll work together to help you understand what your child is experiencing, learn how to respond effectively, and develop a plan to keep your child safe while supporting their recovery.
What We'll Address Together
Understanding Suicidality in Children & Teens
We'll help you understand what suicidal thoughts mean, common warning signs, risk factors, and what might be driving your child's pain. Understanding doesn't make it less scary, but it can help you respond with clarity rather than panic.
Communication Strategies
Learn how to talk with your child about suicide in ways that open conversation rather than shut it down. We'll discuss how to ask direct questions, listen without judgment, validate their feelings while maintaining hope, and navigate difficult conversations with compassion and confidence.
Safety Planning & Crisis Management
Develop a concrete safety plan for your home, including means restriction (securing medications, firearms, and other lethal means), crisis protocols, and when to seek emergency help. We'll help you balance keeping your child safe with maintaining trust and connection.
Supporting Your Child's Treatment
If your child is in therapy, psychiatric care, or has been hospitalized, we'll help you understand their treatment, communicate effectively with providers, support their recovery at home, and navigate decisions about medication, hospitalization, or intensive treatment programs.
Managing Your Own Emotions
It's normal to feel terrified, guilty, angry, helpless, or numb. Parent consultation provides space for you to process your own feelings, address your fears, and develop coping strategies so you can be present and supportive for your child.
Family Dynamics & Sibling Support
Suicidal crisis affects the entire family. We'll discuss how to talk with siblings, maintain family routines, manage conflict, and support everyone's wellbeing during this challenging time.
Recognizing Warning Signs & When to Act
Learn to distinguish between chronic suicidal thoughts and acute crisis, recognize escalation, trust your instincts, and know when immediate intervention is needed. We'll help you feel more confident in your ability to assess risk and respond appropriately.
